Directives to Physicians
Directives to Physicians, also referred to as Advance Directives or Living Wills, are legal documents that allow individuals to outline their healthcare preferences and treatment decisions in advance. These directives serve as essential tools for guiding medical care and ensuring that your wishes are respected, particularly in situations where you may be unable to communicate or make decisions due to illness or incapacity.
What’s Included in a Directive to Physicians?
Directives to Physicians details your preferences regarding medical treatments and interventions in specific circumstances, such as terminal illness, an irreversible condition or permanent unconsciousness. It may cover issues like life support and end-of-life care.
Directives to Physicians may if you desire also include specific instructions regarding medical treatments, procedures, and interventions. You may elect (i) to continue life-sustaining measures; (ii) to discontinue life-sustaining measures except those needed to keep you comfortable; or (iii) to continue life-sustaining measures UNLESS your physician AND your medical power of attorney agent agree that those measures are not in your best interest.
